Transfer Switches
A transfer switch is an electrical switch that switches a load between two sources. Normally, electricity flows from the utility to your home's main electrical panel, where it powers all your circuits and provides power to your home or cottage. Once installed, the transfer switch intercepts with the power coming in from your metre and the electricity powering your home. From there, the transfer switch detects when power is stable from the main source. Once no power is detected, the transfer switch will change to emergency power from the generator.
It is normally placed beside a residential hydro metre outside the property on the wall, but it doesn’t have to go there. It can also be installed in your garage or inside your home or cottage.
When we install the transfer switch, we must obtain a permit from the municipal electrical authority. The hydro company will come onsite to turn off the power from the grid to the property on the day of the installation. The power will be off for 2-4 hours. Once the installation is complete, the utility company returns to reconnect the main utility to your home.
