GENERATOR SAFETY TIPS: DOS & DON’TS

generators

Electrical power plays such a big role in our everyday lives that we cannot think of a world without it. Whether it’s just a power loss issue or you are just facing severe weather, generators provide backup power to devices including refrigerators, chargers and other appliances. Sometimes power outages last for days or weeks, depending on a situation and the method of restoration by the utility company.

A prolonged lack of power means medical equipment, AC and other important electrical appliances will be unusable. This can lead to damage of property or life.

Paramount Power Systems Ltd has been providing reliable, clean and cost-effective rental power solutions since 1989. We also have the proficiency to keep your equipment well maintained. We offer uninterruptible, dependable power that has applications in government, communications, health care and many other sectors.

In this blog post, our expert technicians discuss the dos and don’ts that have to be followed while operating generators.

What to do

There are a number of factors that have to be considered while you are using generators. A few of them are:

· Selecting the generator that’s right for you

Consider what you will be powering. Will it be your household equipment, appliances or lights? Consider purchasing a generator that produces more power than what is going to be drawn from the equipment in your home otherwise the equipment may be damaged.

· Storing your generator safely

Always keep your generator in a clean and dry area that is easily accessible. You don’t want to be tripping over things when the power goes out.

· Using a ground wire

Utilize only properly grounded extension cords to plug equipment into the generator. Without this, you can get electrocuted.

· Checking all cords

All cords that are going to be plugged should be checked for exposed wires.

· Maintaining your generator

Ensure to use only fresh gasoline. Also use a gasoline stabilizer, if a generator is not going to be used for a long time. You should run the generator for a few minutes once every month.

What not to do

Same as do’s, there are certain don’ts that should be taken care of while operating generators. A few of them are:

· Not running your generators inside

Make sure to never run generators in your garage or home. They can produce carbon monoxide fumes which are extremely poisonous. Invest in a CO alarm with a battery back-up, just to be safe; the alarm will sound if the aforementioned gas enters your home.

· Not using the generator unprotected in snow or rain

Keep your generator in a shed during bad weather. It’s crucial to keep your generator dry while it’s on. Never touch it with wet hands to avoid electrocution.

· Not connecting the generator to your home’s circuit panel or main fuse box

A generator should only be connected by a qualified electrician. You must never do it yourself.

· Not overloading your generator

Use it only when needed. Turn it off when you’re away from your home to avoid hazards like a fire.

· Not refuelling while it’s running

Shut it off first and let it cool down. Gasoline spilled on hot engine can start a fire.
